Description
A series of sessions over a period of 9 months (split into 3 x 3 month periods). Designed for groups of up to 6 people. Follows a basic outline, as follows:
Series 1 – PAST
Months 1 to 3
Looking at the historical influences, styles and materials that have shaped the built environment we see around us.
Session 1 – Antiquity
An exploration of Classicism, the classical orders of architecture, and its impact through the centuries.
Session 2 – Socio- economic History
How events have impacted construction. Looking at influences on materials and styles over the centuries.
Session 3 – Transport & Geography
Considering how these affected use of materials. A look at the regions and what constitutes vernacular architecture. A look at distribution of materials.
Session 4 – Industrialisation & Science
How materials and their use developed. The evolution of methods and materials.
Session 5 – Timelines Part 1
Styles and materials over the centuries. A brief look at the various architectural styles and when materials were first used. Period up to C18th.
Session 6 – Timelines Part 2
As above. Period C19th and C20th.
Session 7 – Concluding Session
A session to answer questions not previously dealt with and provide assistance, as appropriate.
Series 2 – PATHOLOGY
Months 4 to 6
Consideration of various materials and elements, looking at their history, performance and factors that lead to deterioration.
Session 1 – Timber
Various uses of timber in construction and framing, and the causes of timber deterioration.
Session 2 – Masonry
Use of brick, stone, and earth, the forms of wall structures, and consideration of how and why such materials may fail.
Session 3 – Roofs
Man-made and natural materials, Iooking at their development and what can lead to failure.
Session 4 – Movement
Causes of movement, investigation, and remedial work.
Session 5 – Damp
Sources, causes, and remediation. A look at a methodology for analysing damp problems.
Session 6 – Windows
The development of windows and glazing, and common problems.
Session 7 – Concluding Session
A session to answer questions not previously dealt with and provide assistance, as appropriate.
Series 3 – PLANNING
Months 7 to 9
Planning for works and alterations and how to ensure a better future for buildings.
Session 1 – Inspections
The assessment of buildings for specific purposes.
Session 2 – Applications
Heritage statements and making applications.
Session 3 – Maintenance
Ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
Session 4 – Works
Preparing schedules and organising works.
Session 5 – Recording
Recording buildings, works, events, and creating a log book.
Session 6 – Problem Solving
When things go wrong.
Session 7 – Concluding Session
A session to answer questions not previously dealt with and provide assistance, as appropriate.
